An NCCA Checklist for Coordinators

A recognised TY elective is one that a school can map onto the NCCA’s four curriculum dimensions (Components, Teaching and Assessment, Recognising and Reporting, and Reflection and Renewal), not one that appears on any official approved list, because no such list exists. The redeveloped Transition Year Programme Statement, in schools from September 2025, deliberately leaves the choice of activity to the school; what it does set out is what any activity, elective or otherwise, needs to include before it counts as part of a properly reported TY year.

Key takeaways

There is no NCCA-approved list of named TY electives. The Programme Statement does name “Elective” as a component type, with a combined time guide of three to four hours a week, but it leaves the choice of content to the school.

An elective needs to map onto four curriculum dimensions: Components, Teaching and Assessment, Recognising and Reporting, and Reflection and Renewal.

Recognising and Reporting means the activity needs a way to be recorded and communicated to the student and their parents, typically through the student’s portfolio.

Reflection and Renewal is the school’s side: reviewing and updating the programme each year. The student’s own end-of-year reflection sits under Recognising and Reporting, with the portfolio and the school report.

The Statement lists “short, certified courses or micro-credentials” as a Career Exploration experience, and tells schools their report should account for accredited micro-credentials from recognised bodies.

An externally accredited course, such as a certified TEFL programme, satisfies these dimensions more easily than an informal activity, because the assessment and outcome are already built in.

Coordinators introducing a new elective should check it against all four dimensions before it goes on the timetable, and keep a simple record of how each one is met.

Is there an official approved list of TY electives?

No. This is the most common misunderstanding among coordinators new to the role. The Transition Year Programme Statement, prepared by the NCCA, is deliberately built around flexibility: it gives schools a framework to plan their own programme for their own context, rather than a fixed menu of approved subjects to pick from. This means a school can genuinely run almost any well-structured activity as an elective, from a language course to a community project, as long as it can be mapped onto the four curriculum dimensions the Statement sets out. The flexibility is a feature, not a gap; it is what lets a small rural school and a large urban school both run a TY programme suited to their own students. It has also scaled: 497 schools offered TY to 24,036 students in September 1995, and by 2022 around 98 per cent of Irish post-primary schools offered it.

What does the Programme Statement actually say about electives?

It names them, but only as one type of component. In its table of TY components, the Statement lists “Elective” under the Being a Learner dimension, describing electives as modules that support, for example, sampling of senior cycle subjects and other areas of learning. It gives time guidance for each component, but it never says which electives a school should run. These are the figures a coordinator actually plans around.

Component

Guidance in the Programme Statement

Student Dimension

Elective modules

Combined equivalent of three to four hours a week, depending on school context

Being a Learner

Maths, English and Irish

No more than two hours a week each

Being a Learner

Portfolio Development

One class a week

Being a Learner

SPHE

Once a week, no more than one hour per class

Personal Growth

Physical Education

Aligned to the Senior Cycle PE Framework

Personal Growth

Work and community placement

Equivalent of two to four weeks of the programme

Career Exploration

Career guidance

One class a week, or classes timed around key career events

Career Exploration

Source: NCCA, Transition Year Programme Statement, Table 3 (published August 2024, introduced across all schools from September 2025). What a coordinator still adds locally is the student’s own reflection on the course, such as a portfolio entry or a short presentation to the class, which the Statement treats as part of reporting, and a quick year-end review of how the elective ran, which feeds Reflection and Renewal. This is a smaller task than building an entire elective’s structure and assessment from scratch, which is why accredited courses are a common choice for coordinators short on planning time.

What should a coordinator actually check before approving a new elective?

Walk the proposed activity through all four dimensions in order, rather than assuming it satisfies them because it sounds educational. Ask whether there is a defined structure and content; whether someone is actually teaching and assessing it, in some form; whether the outcome will genuinely reach the student’s portfolio and end-of-year report, not just live in a teacher’s own notes; whether the student gets a real chance to reflect on it; and whether the school will review it at the end of the year. An elective that is missing Recognising and Reporting, in particular, is the most common gap: a genuinely good activity that never gets written down anywhere the school can point to later.

Question to ask

Dimension

Evidence to keep on file

Is there a defined syllabus, with hours and units?

Components

Course outline and timetable slot

Who delivers it, and how is learning assessed?

Teaching and Assessment

Assessment method and results or module records

Will it reach the portfolio, a student reflection and the school report?

Recognising and Reporting

Certificate, portfolio entry and report line

How will the school review it at year end?

Reflection and Renewal

Student feedback, completion rate and coordinator notes

A working checklist based on the four Curriculum Dimensions in the NCCA TY Programme Statement.
