Redesign homework so it depends on things AI cannot supply, such as the student’s own life, class discussion or a spoken recording, move key writing into the lesson, and teach students to use AI to explain mistakes rather than produce answers.

Key takeaways

Students use ChatGPT because it is fast, free and fluent. Treat it as a design problem before you treat it as a discipline problem.

The clearest sign of AI written homework is a sudden jump above the level the student shows in class, with none of their usual mistakes.

AI detection tools are not reliable enough to accuse a student. A short conversation about the work tells you far more.

Homework built on personal experience, class content, drafts or voice notes is much harder to hand to a chatbot.

Used well, ChatGPT is a useful study partner for explanations, examples and conversation practice.

Ireland’s Department of Education published national guidance on AI in schools in October 2025, and many schools abroad now have their own policies. Check yours first.

Why are ESL students using ChatGPT for homework?

ESL students use ChatGPT for homework because it produces fluent English in seconds, costs nothing, and removes the part of the task they find hardest. For a learner who needs ten minutes to write one careful sentence, a tool that writes a whole paragraph instantly is an obvious temptation. Translation apps did a version of this for years; generative AI simply does it better and in any style you ask for.

It helps to see the problem from the student’s side. Many are adults fitting English around work, or teenagers juggling exams in other subjects. If the homework feels like a box to tick, they will find the quickest way to tick it. The question for a teacher is less “how do I catch them?” and more “how do I set work where using AI to do it gets them nothing?”

Education systems are working through the same question. In Ireland, the Department of Education and Youth published its Guidance on Artificial Intelligence in Schools in October 2025, and the Minister described it as a document that will be reviewed and updated as research comes in. Before that, the then Minister had said the aim was for students to benefit from generative AI while being supported to avoid becoming over-dependent on it for their thinking. That balance, benefit without dependence, is a good target for any English classroom.

Free test

Thinking about teaching English yourself?

Check your own English level and get free advice on which TEFL course suits you.

Take the free English level test →

How can you tell when homework was written by AI?

The clearest sign of AI written homework is a gap between the homework and the student you know. If someone who writes simple sentences with regular article errors in class suddenly hands in polished, error free paragraphs with phrases like “a myriad of opportunities”, something has changed, and it is probably not overnight progress.

Other common signs include vocabulary and grammar well beyond anything taught so far, a smooth but generic tone that could describe anyone’s weekend, perfectly balanced paragraphs on a topic the student usually struggles with, and spelling conventions different from the ones you teach. None of these proves anything on its own. Plenty of students get help from a sibling or use a dictionary heavily.

Be careful with AI detection tools. They give a percentage, not proof, and they can flag genuine writing, including writing by learners whose simpler style looks “predictable” to the software. They are not a sound basis for accusing anyone. A far better test is to ask the student to talk you through what they wrote, or to write a short paragraph on the same topic in class. Their real level shows up within minutes.

Should you ban ChatGPT in your English class?

A blanket ban on ChatGPT is hard to enforce for homework and usually pushes use underground rather than stopping it. Students can use AI on their phones, at home, in any language, and you will rarely know for certain. A ban also throws away a tool that, used properly, can help learners.

That does not mean anything goes. Your first step is to find out what your school or academy expects. Many language schools abroad now have an AI policy, and state schools in Ireland are expected to develop or update theirs in line with the national guidance. Follow the policy, and if there is none, agree simple rules with your class: what AI may be used for, what it may not, and what happens if work turns out not to be theirs.

The rules work best when they are about learning, not cheating. “You can ask AI to explain a grammar point, but the writing you hand in must be yours” is clear and fair, and it gives students a legitimate way to use the tool.

How do you set homework ChatGPT cannot do for students?

Set homework that depends on something the AI does not have: the student’s own life, what happened in your lesson, their voice, or visible stages of their own work. The table shows how common homework tasks can be redesigned.

Redesigning ESL homework for the age of ChatGPT

Typical homework

Easy to hand to AI?

Redesigned version

Write an essay on the advantages of city life

Very easy

Describe your own street to a visitor, using three phrases from today’s lesson

Answer comprehension questions on a text

Easy

Record a one minute voice note retelling the text, then note two words you looked up

Write a formal email

Very easy

Draft it in class, then improve it at home and highlight every change you made

Grammar gap fill

Easy

Write five true sentences about your week using the structure, then ask a family member one question using it

Learn a vocabulary list

Not relevant

Keep using it: students quiz each other in the next lesson

Examples are illustrative. Adapt them to your learners’ level and age.

Three principles sit behind the table. Make it personal, because AI can invent a weekend but not your student’s actual one, and you will notice. Make it spoken where you can, because a voice note is far harder to outsource than a paragraph. Make the process visible, with drafts, highlighted changes and short reflections, so the learning sits in the steps rather than the finished text.

It is also worth moving the writing that matters most into the lesson. Ten minutes of supervised writing gives you an honest sample of each student’s level, and it is excellent feedback material. Our guide to teaching grammar to ESL students shows how to turn that kind of sample into targeted practice.

How can students use ChatGPT well?

Students use ChatGPT well when they treat it as a patient tutor rather than a ghost writer. Show them how in class, because most learners only know the “write this for me” prompt.

Useful habits to teach include asking the AI to correct a paragraph and explain each correction, then rewriting it themselves without looking; asking for five example sentences using a new word; asking it to play a shop assistant or interviewer for conversation practice; and asking it to quiz them on the week’s vocabulary. Each of these keeps the student doing the thinking.

Teach a healthy dose of scepticism as well. AI explanations of grammar are usually decent but sometimes confidently wrong, especially on fine points of usage. Encourage students to check anything surprising with you or a reliable reference. That habit is a language lesson in itself.

TEFL Stories

The TEFL Institute of Ireland

How Erika Landed Her First Online Teaching Job After TEFL | Student Success Story

Watch on YouTube · The TEFL Institute of Ireland

Erika’s story is a useful picture of online teaching from the teacher’s side, the setting where live lesson time matters most.

How do you talk to a student you think used AI?

Talk to the student privately, start with curiosity rather than accusation, and focus on the learning that was missed. “Talk me through how you wrote this” is a better opener than “Did you use ChatGPT?”, because it lets the student explain without being cornered.

Often the answer is somewhere in between: they wrote a draft, put it through a tool to “fix” it, and got back something unrecognisable. That is a teaching moment. Show them what was lost, which is the practice, and agree what acceptable help looks like next time. If the work was clearly not theirs, follow your school’s policy, involve your Director of Studies where needed, and ask for the task to be redone in class.

Keep the tone calm and the consequences proportionate. A student who feels humiliated will hide AI use more carefully next time. A student who understands why it matters is more likely to change how they work.

What does this mean for online English teachers?

For online teachers, the answer is to put more weight on live lesson time and less on written homework. In a one to one lesson you hear the student speak, read their writing as they type it and correct in real time, which is exactly what AI cannot fake.

Use homework for preparation rather than assessment: a short recording, a list of questions they want to ask, or notes on something they read. Then spend the lesson using it. A short in-class task or a conversation about the work shows you what they can produce in English themselves.
Which homework works best for teenagers?
Voice notes, short presentations and personal descriptions work well with teenagers, because they depend on the student's own voice and experience.
Should I talk to parents about AI and homework?
Share the reasons with parents: homework is practice, and AI shortcuts skip the practice. Agreeing simple rules early avoids awkward conversations later.
Which TEFL course prepares me to teach in Spain?
Our accredited 120 hour TEFL course covers lesson design and feedback for classes like these.
Do Italian language schools allow students to use AI?
Many do, and rules vary from school to school. Check your school's policy before you set homework, and agree with your class what kind of AI help is acceptable.
How can I check a student's real English level?
Ask students to explain their answers aloud, rewrite a paragraph in class, or record a short summary. Exam candidates benefit from timed writing in the lesson.
Can AI help students prepare for English exams?
Yes, if they use it to practise rather than to produce answers: asking for feedback, example sentences or conversation practice, then checking anything surprising with the teacher.
What should I do if I suspect AI was used?
Keep it calm and private. Ask the student to talk you through the work, then agree how they will redo it. Proportionate responses work better than public accusations.
Does this apply to online English lessons too?
Online, put more weight on live lesson time and use homework for preparation, such as short recordings or questions to discuss.
