Summer vacation, online ESL teaching and TEFL job searching

TEFL Jobs in Summer Camps

Spread the love

During July I spent 20 days travelling across Eastern Europe; starting off in Vilnius I flew to Minsk, Belarus for 4 days then onto Lviv, Ukraine for 5 days where I took a bus to Krakow, Poland and explored the Silesia region of Central Europe located mostly in Poland, with small parts of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. I produced a lot of new artwork and I was fortunate to meet interesting and hospitable people along the way. I even taught private English one-to-one communicative lessons during my trip with individuals who found me via social media advertisements. As for travelling and teaching ESL, I think it is possible if you know where to look. For example, online ESL teaching opportunities enable you to set your own schedule, material and rates which is great if you want to move around working from anywhere in the world like I do. Just make sure you have a strong Internet connection and you don’t take lessons in cafes or noisy places!

Another common way Skype is used by TEFL teachers is through interviews with English language schools abroad. Since there are a lot of language schools out there it’s common to apply for a vacancy and be invited for a Skype interview the following day. Therefore, it’s important to do your homework about the school before an interview. Make sure you have understood what the school is offering so that you can walk into the interview confident and ready to ask relevant questions. Some schools require you to prepare a mock lesson to demonstrate your teaching skills. One time I had to prepare an interview for 8-10 year olds and had to present it to the school’s director of studies! Fair to say I was very nervous, but, the end result got me a summer camp ESL teaching position. It’s just something every TEFL teacher has to face during the recruitment process so my advice is simply to produce a normal lesson plan and have back up material and don’t fly out for a job prior to a solid contract agreement being signed.
