Getting there

On arrival at Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX), you’ll enjoy airport pickup from our in-country team.

What do you need to organize?

  • International flights: You’ll need return flights (can be two one-way)
  • Police check: You’ll need a clean criminal record
  • Health check: You’ll need to provide a health statement
  • Vaccines: Consult your local doctor for advice
  • Budget: Spending money for your six weeks plus excursions etc.
  • Visa cost: You’ll have support to obtain your government sponsored visa
  • Insurance: It’s really important to sort your travel and health before you go!

Your teaching experience

Placements vary from primary to university level in a selection of the best  schools in the province. Couples and friends are more than welcome to apply to this program, as there will be at least 2 foreign teachers per school in the majority of cases.

Through 15 hours of face-to-face teaching in an actual classroom setting per week, you will be aiming to improve your students’ listening and speaking skills. You don’t have to worry about being on your own over there; the schools will assign an in-country liaison to provide assistance and support.

And while you’re teaching students to be more confident in using spoken English, there’s also the opportunity for you to learn something as well – you’ll enjoy two hours of Mandarin lessons per week!

You will spend the next few months gaining hands-on teaching experience in Hunan’s capital, Changsha.

Outside the classroom

For life outside of the classroom, you have the opportunity to discover real Chinese hospitality in the heart of south-central China.

The first stop on your Hunan bucket list has to be Orange Island, reachable by metro from the city centre and found in the middle of Xiang River. Stroll around and try one of the freshly grown oranges; don’t miss the weekly fireworks display on Saturdays.

With waterfalls and rolling grasslands plus famous mountains including Mt. Hengshan (one of China’s five sacred mountains), you will never be short of places to explore. Pay homage to the holy nature reserve and reflect in ancient monasteries.

You can’t visit China without participating in the camaraderie of a Chinese tea ceremony; long pots are common and often used in performances across the region in busy tea houses.

Try soaking up the history of the Qing Dynasty, or see a perfectly preserved corpse from the Mawangdui Han Tomb at Hunan’s popular museum.

Enjoy all seasons in Changsha, surround yourself with beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and experience their world famous lantern festival. Bask in summer sunshine on weekends off and come winter, enjoy a walk in the snow-covered Yuelu Academy Park.

With 2,000 Renminbi (RMB) monthly allowance, 4,500 Renminbi (RMB) flight reimbursement upon completion, free accommodation throughout the internship plus free workday meals, you are pretty much set to enjoy your time and be comfortable while traveling in your spare time.

Don’t forget you’ll receive your deposit back during orientation and this extra 2,000 Renminbi (RMB) will go a long way towards your first month’s spending.
