TEFL Spain Internship | Meet Alice
Tell us about yourself. We’d love to know your background, what drew you to teaching abroad in Spain, and more.
My name is Alice, I’m 24, from Cork, Ireland. I recently graduated from art college, where I studied Fine Art. What drew me to wanting to teach English in Spain, was the opportunity to soak up other cultures while also contributing to a community. I love to work with kids and I also wanted to gain more experience in a school setting.
Where are you based in Spain? Are you living in the city or a town? Is it an easy commute from your accommodation to school?
I am based 1 hour outside of Barcelona and Girona in a small residential town called Manlleu. It has some lovely scenery in the town centre and a big river which is great for soaking up nature between classes. My commute is about 10/15 minutes on foot or 5 minutes in a car. One of the kids in my host family goes to the same school I am at, so having a lift can be handy, but I usually prefer to walk so I can listen to music and explore the town.
What is your accommodation like?
I’m staying with a local host family, which includes two parents and two young kids. They have a couple of horses, a guinea pig, a bird, and a dog. The house is conveniently within walking distance of my school, and I have my own room and bathroom. They’re excellent cooks and were incredibly helpful with any questions I had about the area. I have the freedom to come and go as I like, and the WiFi is great!
What age group do you work with? Would you consider teaching other age groups?
I work with 7-12 year old kids in a primary school nearby. My classes are 1 hour long and I have 20 per week. I teach a mixture of English and arts & crafts (in English). I would consider teaching older kids so that we can work on more complex things.
What is one thing about the life of teaching abroad that you never expected/weren’t prepared for?
The Spanish schools finish at 5pm which is so late compared to Ireland so that took some getting used to. Also they eat dinner quite late at 8,9 or even 10pm at night. Something random I was not prepared for was that there is no school bell at all in my school so I must wear a watch/have my phone on me all the time as if I don’t I could miss a class who are expecting me thinking it was still lunch time! (Not every classroom has a clock either)
What has been your most rewarding experience as a teacher in Spain so far?
Something I’ve loved teaching was crafts that I am interested in. I love to watch the kids put their own style onto it. It has been very rewarding watching them gain interest in something I’ve chosen and be proud of it afterwards.
What advice do you have for someone on the fence about whether to teach abroad or not?
I think if you are on the fence, to hop off it…. and into your new life in Spain!!! The food, the people, the language, the culture are amazing!!! I hope everyone gets to experience the kindness of the Spanish people at least once!
