Moving or visiting Cambodia? One of the best ways to get acquainted with a new country is to learn the language. For those unfamiliar with Cambodia, the official language spoken there is Khmer. Although there are different languages based on geography, Khmer is the most widely spoken. By knowing a few key phrases, you will easily be able to travel throughout the country and communicate with locals. For anyone traveling to Cambodia and especially for our interns beginning their adventure in this unique Southeast Asian country, here are a few key phrases in Khmer to help you with the transition!

If you have traveled to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand or Vietnam, you will notice the similarities in the language to Khmer. This is due to the geographic proximity to the two countries. This should help you with the pronunciation of the words. Either way, when you are traveling in Cambodia, do not be afraid to try to speak the language. Even if you completely mispronounce the word or say something crazy, the locals will appreciate the fact that you are trying to speak Khmer. Even knowing a few simple key phrases in Khmer goes a long way!
