Overview
Austria has no statutory minimum wage: Eurostat records that as of 1 July 2026 pay floors are set by sectoral collective agreement rather than by law. Irish teachers need no visa and no work permit, and Ireland’s own state scheme pays language assistants in Austria approximately €2,000 gross for 13 hours a week.
What Irish teachers should know first
Start with the thing that separates you from almost every reader the other Austria guides are written for. Ireland is an EU member state, so freedom of movement applies: there is no visa, no work permit, no sponsorship and no salary threshold standing between you and an Austrian teaching contract. The American and British readers those guides address are dealing with a permit process that simply does not exist for you.
There is still a registration step. Under Austrian residence rules published on oesterreich.gv.at by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, EU citizens intending to stay longer than three months must apply for an Anmeldebescheinigung — a registration certificate — from the competent settlement authority within four months of arrival. In Vienna that is MA 35; elsewhere it is the district authority. This is a formality, but the four-month clock starts the day you land.
How is teaching pay actually set in Austria?
By collective agreement, not by legislation — and this is the single most useful thing to understand before you negotiate. Eurostat’s minimum wage statistics record Austria as one of only five EU countries with no national minimum wage, alongside Denmark, Italy, Finland and Sweden; in all of them, minimum pay is laid down by collective agreements covering specific sectors. In practice that means there is no single legal number you can point to. What governs your pay is the Kollektivvertrag for the sector your employer falls under, and the correct question at interview is not “what is the minimum wage here” but “which collective agreement applies to this post, and what grade am I being placed at”. Get the answer in writing. We do not publish an average TEFL salary figure for Austria because no official Austrian body publishes one that we could source.
The exception, and it is a good one for Irish applicants, is the state language assistant route. Ireland’s Department of Education and Youth runs an English Language Assistant scheme that places Irish assistants in Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Belgium/Wallonia-Brussels. Its published terms and conditions for the Austrian posting set the appointment as 1 October 2026 to 31 May 2027, 13 hours a week, at approximately €2,000 gross, with successful applicants also required to accept the post on the Austrian platform — the programme is administered on the Austrian side by OeAD, the national agency for education and internationalisation. Those are official Irish government figures, published by the department itself, and they are the most reliable pay reference point on this page. The scheme is aimed at students intending to become teachers or already training, so it will not suit everyone, but if it suits you it is the cleanest entry into Austrian classrooms available to an Irish passport holder.

Austria is most often compared with its larger neighbour and with the other classic European posting, so read teaching English in Germany and teaching English in Italy before you commit. And if you do not hold a certificate yet, that is the first step: see our TEFL courses in Ireland.
No obligation and no sales pitch. Tell us what you want out of the year and we will tell you honestly whether Austria fits.

Living costs
Austria is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, having produced some of the world’s greatest composers, writers, and thinkers. The capital, Vienna, is known as both the “City of Music” and the “City of Dreams,” offering world-class museums, opera houses, theatres, and historic landmarks. Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Graz also boast a vibrant cultural life alongside stunning natural surroundings.
While Austria offers an excellent quality of life, it is also recognised for its relatively high cost of living particularly in major cities like Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. Housing, groceries, transport, and leisure activities can be expensive compared to other parts of Europe. However, these costs are often balanced by Austria’s strong social infrastructure, reliable public services, and high living standards, which contribute to its reputation as one of the best countries to live in worldwide.
