Editor’s note
The Hire Wire is written for teachers in Ireland who are tired of guessing which TEFL jobs abroad are real. So we go to the sources: ministry circulars, embassy notices and the programme pages themselves, and we print what they actually say, with the date we checked it. You voted for Spain, and Issue 005 is the full workup. It opens with something none of us expected to find: the Irish government scheme that places graduates in Spanish state schools has no new places this year, and the only notice is a line on a gov.ie page. The issue sets out what is still open to an Irish passport, what Spain actually pays, the registration you must do within three months of arriving, and the wage floor no academy can go under. Our Madrid line on the board has been corrected in place too, because it was tracking the American strand rather than the Irish one. If a line on this page is wrong, we correct it and say so.

JET’s 2027 application opened on 21 September and the Irish closing date is 23:59 on Friday 4 December 2026, set by the Embassy of Japan in Dublin. Each embassy sets its own: the United Kingdom closes 5 November and the United States 13 November. The Irish route into Spain’s assistant programme, the Department of Education and Youth’s ELA scheme, has no new places for 2026/27. No 2027/28 TAPIF date is published: the last cycle opened on 3 November, so early November is a pattern rather than a promise. NALCAP is the North American strand of the Spanish programme and is not open to an Irish passport, so its dates are not your dates. Pick the places you care about and we email you in time to actually apply, and nothing else.
Updated 3 September 2026: this panel previously read “JET closes in November” and “NALCAP goes in April”. Neither was carried by the official notice cited for it. JET now matches the programme’s own timeline of October to late November or early December, set by each embassy, and NALCAP matches the board below, which has shown no published 2027/28 date since the window shut on 30 June.
Updated 17 September 2026: this panel previously said TAPIF “closes in January”. No 2027/28 closing date has been published. Our own Paperwork Desk records the last cycle as running from 3 November to 15 March, so a January close was never carried by the source. The panel now names the opening month only. Two further changes today: the Salary Index card on this page read “Pay checked past €2,300 a month”, which was Hungary’s figure. Issue 004 established that route is not open to an Irish passport, so the card no longer quotes it. The Istanbul line has moved from “classrooms open 14 September” to past tense now that the date has passed.
Updated 24 September 2026: this panel previously said JET “closes in late November or early December”. That came from the programme’s generic timeline page rather than a notice for this cycle. The 2027 application opened on 21 September 2026 and the United States deadline is 13 November 2026, both read at source on 23 September. Ireland’s closing date is set by the Embassy of Japan in Dublin, and we have not been able to verify one, so the panel now says so rather than name a month.
Updated 1 October 2026: this panel previously said TAPIF “opens in early November” as a flat statement. No 2027/28 date is published anywhere official; our own Paperwork Desk records the last cycle opening on 3 November, so early November is a pattern and the panel now says so. The panel also now carries the finding that led Issue 005: the Irish ELA route into Spain has no new places for 2026/27. NALCAP stays on the panel only to say it is the North American strand and not a route an Irish passport can use.

Our own qualifications are held to the same test: Ofqual regulated, awarded by Highfield Qualifications, with the qualification number, the awarding body’s recognition number and our approved centre number all published so you can look them up on a public register.
