Teaching English in Budapest means private language schools, corporate classes in office districts and a split working day that starts at seven in the morning and ends after eight at night. It is the most competitive market in Hungary and the best paid. Irish teachers can take any of it without a permit.

Key takeaways

  • Budapest holds most of Hungary’s language schools, most of its corporate training work and almost all of its international schools.
  • The working day is split: early corporate classes, afternoon young learners, evening adults.
  • Rent decides your budget. A one bedroom flat typically runs HUF 230,000 to HUF 310,000 a month depending on district.
  • Irish citizens need no work permit, only a registration certificate from the immigration authority by day 93.
  • Competition is the real barrier, not regulation. A regulated qualification is what gets a CV read.

What is the teaching market in Budapest actually like?

Budapest is a buyer’s market for schools and a competitive one for teachers. The city has a large resident population of English speakers, a steady stream of arrivals, and a language school sector that has been established for decades. A director of studies filling an evening adult class in August is choosing between applicants rather than hoping one turns up.

That competition sets the tone for everything else. Schools expect a certificate, they expect a demonstration lesson, and they expect you to be available for the awkward hours. In exchange, Budapest pays better than the rest of Hungary, offers far more variety of work, and gives you a city that a lot of teachers end up staying in for years.

Who hires in the city, and for what hours?

Four kinds of employer dominate, and most Budapest teachers eventually build a timetable from two or three of them at once.

Employer Typical hours What they teach
Private language school Afternoons and evenings, Saturday mornings General English, exam preparation, young learners
Corporate training provider 7am to 9am and lunchtimes, on client sites Business English, meetings and presentations, industry vocabulary
International and bilingual school School day, academic year contract Curriculum subjects in English, EAL support
Private tutoring Whatever you sell Exam candidates, university applicants, professionals

Patterns are typical of the Budapest market in 2026 and vary by employer.

The corporate work is the part most new arrivals underestimate. Budapest has a large shared services and technology sector, which generates a steady demand for business English delivered on site before the working day starts. It pays well per hour, it is often freelance, and it is the fastest way to lift a modest language school salary into something comfortable. Which districts should you live in?

Budapest residential street with tram tracks running between apartment buildings

District VII and District VIII put you in the middle of everything, including the noise. District XIII, particularly Újlipótváros, is the compromise most teachers settle on: residential, well connected, walkable to the centre and not priced like District V. Across the river, Districts I, II and XII are quieter, greener and more expensive, and the outer Pest districts are where the affordable flats are.

Transport makes the decision easier than it looks. The metro, tram and bus network is dense and cheap, with a monthly pass at around HUF 9,000, so living two or three stops out costs you little in convenience and a lot less in rent. If your timetable is split across the city, prioritise being near a metro line over being near the centre.

What does it cost to live in Budapest as a teacher?

Rent is the number that matters. Expect roughly HUF 230,000 to HUF 310,000 a month for a one bedroom flat, plus a separate building charge in many blocks and utilities on top, which climb sharply in winter in older buildings. Sharing brings that down substantially and is how most first year teachers start.

Everything else is affordable. Groceries, public transport, a canteen lunch and intercity trains are all well below Irish prices, and the city’s free and cheap entertainment is one of the reasons teachers stay. The realistic assessment is that a Budapest teaching salary funds a good life in the city and very little saving, unless you add online hours paid in euro. Our page on teaching English online covers how teachers combine the two, and our Hungary salary breakdown runs the gross to net maths, including the income tax exemption for teachers under 25.

What paperwork do you need before you start?

As an Irish citizen you need no visa and no work permit. You do need to register your stay: any EEA national living in Hungary beyond 90 days must report to the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing by the 93rd day after entry. The registration certificate is normally issued on the spot and the address card follows by post.

Two more items follow and you cannot be paid without them: a Hungarian tax identification number and a TAJ card for social security and healthcare. Budapest schools deal with this constantly and a well run one will point you at the right office in your first fortnight. The European Commission’s Your Europe pages are the plain language reference if an employer or landlord needs convincing of your status.

How do you break into the Budapest market?

Time your arrival. August is when September timetables are built and January is when mid year gaps appear, and those two windows are worth more than any amount of applying from home in April. Summer camps, which hire late in the spring, are the other reliable way in and often lead to term time offers.

Then do the unfashionable things. Email named directors of studies rather than generic inboxes. Offer a demonstration lesson without being asked. Say in your first line that you are an EU citizen with the right to work, because it removes the objection that stops most applications. And accept an awkward timetable for the first term, because in Budapest the good hours go to the teachers who are already on the books.

Qualifications are the filter. Our accredited 120 hour course is the baseline and the Ofqual regulated Level 5 diploma is what separates a CV in a city with this much competition. For the full country view, start with our guide to teaching English in Hungary or browse the wider country guides hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to find English teaching work in Budapest?

It is the most competitive market in Hungary, because the city attracts a large pool of resident English speakers. Work is available, particularly in the August and January hiring windows and in corporate business English, but a certificate and a willingness to teach unsocial hours are both effectively required.

What hours do English teachers work in Budapest?

Split shifts are normal. Corporate classes run from around 7am on client sites, young learner classes fill the afternoon after school, and adult general English runs in the evening. Saturday morning classes are common. A full time load is usually counted in contact hours rather than a 40 hour week.

How much is rent in Budapest for a teacher?

A one bedroom flat typically costs around HUF 230,000 to HUF 310,000 a month, with outer Pest districts cheapest and District V, District XIII and the Buda hills at the top. Many buildings add a separate monthly common charge, and winter utilities in older blocks can be significant.

Which Budapest districts suit teachers best?

District XIII, particularly Újlipótváros, is the usual compromise between price, quiet and connections. Districts VII and VIII are central and lively but noisy, the Buda districts are greener and dearer, and the outer Pest districts are where the affordable flats are. Proximity to a metro line matters more than proximity to the centre.

Do I need a work permit to teach in Budapest?

Not as an Irish or other EU citizen. You need no visa, permit or sponsorship. You do have to register your stay with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing by the 93rd day after arriving, and then obtain a Hungarian tax number and a TAJ social security card before you can be paid.

Is business English the best paid work in Budapest?

Per hour, usually yes. Budapest has a large shared services and technology sector that buys on site business English, often early in the morning, and the hourly rates are higher than general English classes. It is frequently freelance, so factor in unpaid travel between client sites.
