How much does a TEFL course cost?
At sale prices, a flagship online TEFL course from these six providers costs between $109 and €328. Advertised “regular” prices run from £379 to €875, but TEFL promotions are close to permanent, so the sale price is the realistic figure. The more useful comparison is what the price includes: course hours, qualification level, live tutor time and what happens after you finish.
The price spread maps to the product. At the lower end you get a 120-hour certificate at Level 3, the entry standard for most first jobs. At the upper end you get a Level 5 diploma such as our 300-hour Advanced TEFL Diploma, with more hours, a higher qualification level and structured mentorship built in. Watch for the quiet costs either way: extension fees, paid certificates and job support that ends the day you graduate.
Which TEFL providers are accredited or regulated?
Everyone on this page claims accreditation, but the claims are not equivalent. The strongest form is a qualification regulated by a government body: Ofqual, the UK government’s qualifications regulator, regulates Level 5 TEFL diplomas awarded through approved awarding organisations such as Highfield and Qualifi. DEAC approval is a recognised American benchmark. Independent accreditors such as the British Accreditation Council, ODLQC and ACDL sit a tier below.
On the pages we checked, TEFL.ie and TEFL Org named the broadest range of accrediting and regulating bodies; our own diploma is regulated through Highfield (centre 21335) with the qualification number 600/0000/A published for anyone to verify. The TEFL Academy and i-to-i both cite Ofqual regulation and DEAC approval. ITTT and myTEFL describe their courses as accredited but list their accreditors far less specifically on their sales pages, making independent verification harder. If accreditation matters for your visa or employer, ask for the awarding body by name; our full list is on our accreditation page.

Nearly everyone offers tutor support of some kind, so dig into the detail: how many hours of live, scheduled human contact do you actually get, and does the job help keep going once you are qualified and applying from a kitchen table in Cork or a flat in Osaka? Scheduled live mentorship and coaching beat email-only feedback every time.
TEFL provider reviews: what Trustpilot shows
Confirmed Trustpilot scores among these six providers ranged from 4.4 to 4.9 out of 5 when we checked. The TEFL Academy and TEFL.ie both held 4.9, with The TEFL Academy carrying far more reviews (2,248 against our 373), while i-to-i had the largest review volume of all (3,232) at the lowest confirmed score (4.4). MyTEFL’s Trustpilot page could not be verified when we checked, so we report no score rather than an unconfirmed one.
Weigh any review score together with volume and recency, and read how a company answers its critical reviews. A high score from a few hundred reviews and a high score from a few thousand are both good signs; a perfect score from a handful is not a signal at all.
Refund policies compared
Refund terms vary more than any other feature here. ITTT makes the most unconditional promise: a full refund within 3 days of payment, no questions asked, plus a price match. Our own policy is a 14-day money-back guarantee, minus a €30 admin fee, and it ends once you reach Module 3 of the course; we would rather state that plainly than bury it. The TEFL Academy relies on the standard 14-day statutory withdrawal right in its terms. i-to-i’s “guaranteed pass” promise refunds you only if you fail despite following all tutor feedback. TEFL Org did not prominently state a guarantee on the pages we checked, and myTEFL’s terms state that online course fees are non-refundable once you enrol. Whatever you choose, read the refund clause in the terms and conditions before you pay, not after.
How to choose a TEFL provider
- Check who regulates the qualification, not just the brand. Ask for the awarding body by name (for example, Highfield or Qualifi for Ofqual-regulated Level 5 diplomas) and look for a published qualification number.
- Compare like with like. A $109 course for 120 hours at Level 3 and a €328 diploma for 300 hours at Level 5 are different products, not different prices for the same thing.
- Ignore the “was” price. Judge value on what you actually pay and what is included at that price.
- Ask what tutor support means in practice. Weekly live mentorship and email-only feedback are very different experiences.
- Read the refund and extension terms before enrolling. Access periods, extension fees and refund windows differ sharply between providers.
- Verify reviews independently. Go to Trustpilot directly rather than trusting badges on a sales page.

Is a 300-hour TEFL course better than a 120-hour one?
It depends on your plans. 120 hours from an accredited provider is the minimum most employers ask for. A 300-hour Level 5 diploma covers more teaching skills, sits at a higher level on the qualification framework and carries more weight with competitive employers. If you plan to teach for more than a year, or want the stronger CV line, the extra hours are usually worth it.
What does Ofqual-regulated mean for a TEFL course?
Ofqual is the UK government’s qualifications regulator. An Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL diploma sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework and is awarded through an Ofqual-approved awarding organisation such as Highfield or Qualifi, with a qualification number you can verify independently. That is regulation of the qualification itself, which is a stronger claim than a private accreditation badge on a company website.
Which TEFL certificate do employers prefer?
Most employers set 120 hours from an accredited provider as the minimum.
