What is the legal minimum an English teacher can be paid?

Hungary sets two wage floors by government decree every January. From 1 January 2026 the general minimum wage, the minimálbér, is HUF 322,800 gross a month. The guaranteed wage minimum, the garantált bérminimum, is HUF 373,200 gross and applies to any job that requires at least a secondary qualification or a degree.

That distinction matters when you are reading a contract. If the advert asks for a degree or a recognised teaching qualification, the higher floor applies and an offer below it is not lawful. Employers also pay a 13 per cent social contribution tax on top of gross, which is why a school quoting you a number is usually quoting gross rather than what lands in your account.

What do English teachers actually earn?

Most full time language school contracts sit between the qualified floor and the national median. How much of a Hungarian salary do you keep?

Hungary runs one of the simplest tax systems in Europe. Personal income tax is a flat 15 per cent on all income, with no bands. Employee social contributions are 18.5 per cent. So a teacher over 25 with no allowances keeps roughly two thirds of gross.

Under 25, the picture changes completely. Workers under 25 are exempt from personal income tax on monthly earnings up to HUF 715,765 in 2026, which is higher than any realistic teaching salary. That means a teacher under 25 pays no income tax on their teaching pay at all, losing only the 18.5 per cent contributions.

The relief is restricted to citizens of the European Economic Area and a small group of neighbouring countries, so Irish teachers qualify and most non EU teachers do not. If you are in your early twenties, that is a meaningful pay gap in your favour over colleagues doing the identical job, and it is worth factoring in before you compare a Hungarian offer against one from Spain or Italy.

What does that salary buy in Hungary?

Rent is the decisive cost. A one bedroom flat in Budapest typically runs somewhere around HUF 230,000 to HUF 310,000 a month, with outer Pest districts cheapest and District V, District XIII and the Buda hills at the top of the range. Many buildings charge a separate monthly common fee on top, which new arrivals routinely forget to budget for.

Outside the capital rent can be close to half that, which is why a small city contract at a lower salary frequently leaves a teacher better off. Everyday costs are modest: a monthly city travel pass is around HUF 9,000, and eating out, groceries and intercity rail are all well below Irish prices.

How does Hungary compare with its neighbours?

On headline pay, Hungary sits in the same band as Poland, Slovakia and Czechia and well below Western Europe. On net pay for a young teacher, it is arguably the strongest in the region, because no neighbouring country hands an under 25 a full income tax exemption at that ceiling.

How do you negotiate a better offer?

Ask whether the figure is gross or net, first and always. Hungarian employers quote gross by default and the gap is around a third. Then ask what is counted: contact hours or working hours, whether preparation and cover are paid, and whether the school pays for the journey between sites if you teach corporate classes across the city.

Three things are more negotiable than salary. Housing, which some employers will contribute to even when they do not advertise it. Contact hours, because a cap written into the contract protects your evenings. And the summer, because a school that wants you back in September will often fund camp work or a reduced summer retainer rather than lose you.
