What is the Central European Teaching Program?

CETP is a placement organisation that has been sending English speakers into Central European schools since 1990 and now focuses on Hungary. It is not a government scheme, and it is not funded by the Hungarian state. Teachers apply to CETP, CETP matches them with a host school, and the school employs them directly on the same terms as its Hungarian staff.

The programme’s own details page sets out what the placement covers, including accommodation arranged and paid for by the host institution, and support with the residence formalities on arrival. Most placements are outside Budapest, in towns and regional cities where a foreign teacher is an event rather than a commodity.

How does the programme work?

Two intakes run each year. The standard term is ten months, roughly September to mid-June, matching the Hungarian academic year. A shorter six-month term starts in January and runs to June, which suits graduates who miss the autumn cycle or want to try a half-year before committing.

You are a full employee of your host school, not a classroom assistant, and you are paid on the school’s own scale, which is set nationally rather than by CETP. Housing is usually a private furnished flat provided by the school, and utilities are covered. Orientation happens before term starts and covers basic Hungarian, the grading system and what the school will expect of you.

Who is eligible?

CETP requires a bachelor’s degree, either already held or due to be completed before the placement begins, and applicants must be native English speakers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or another EU country. Ireland qualifies on both counts. Teaching experience is preferred rather than mandatory, and the programme states that it can usually place a candidate who is willing to gain some experience before departure.

A TEFL certificate is not always a hard requirement, but it can affect the placement you are offered and the classroom you walk into. Arriving with an accredited 120-hour certificate is the difference between managing a Hungarian secondary class and enjoying it.

Should an Irish teacher pay for a placement programme?

This is the honest question, and it has a two-sided answer. Irish citizens already have the right to live and work in Hungary with no visa and no sponsorship, so the largest thing CETP sells to an American applicant, which is legal access to the job market, is something you already have. Registering your stay with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing by day 93 is the only paperwork required, and it is free.

What the fee does buy is a guaranteed post, a furnished flat, utilities paid and someone to call when a form is in Hungarian. For a first-time teacher heading to a town where very little English is spoken, that is worth something real. For a teacher who is confident about finding their own work, or who wants Budapest, the same money is better spent on a stronger qualification and a couple of months of rent while you interview.

Pay on the public school scale is modest, and CETP is explicit that the salary is low by North American standards and is designed to be liveable because housing is covered. Hungarian statutory floors still apply: the guaranteed wage minimum for qualified roles is HUF 373,200 gross a month in 2026, against a national median gross wage of HUF 615,600 reported by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office for May 2026.

For an Irish teacher under 25, the arithmetic improves sharply.
