Irish citizens can teach English in Hungary with no visa and no work permit. You register your stay with the immigration authority by day 93 and that is the legal process finished. Pay looks modest in euro terms, but a flat 15 per cent income tax and a full exemption for under 25s change the arithmetic more than most country guides admit.

Key takeaways

  • As an EU citizen you need no visa and no work permit. You register with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing by the 93rd day after you arrive.
  • Hungary sets a statutory floor for qualified roles. In 2026 the guaranteed wage minimum is HUF 373,200 gross a month, above the general minimum wage of HUF 322,800.
  • Average gross earnings across the whole economy were HUF 764,100 in May 2026, with median gross earnings of HUF 615,600, according to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.
  • Teachers under 25 pay no personal income tax on monthly earnings up to HUF 715,765 in 2026. Irish citizens qualify because the relief is open to EEA nationals.
  • Most hiring is done by private language schools, bilingual schools and company training providers, with a public school route through the Central European Teaching Program.
  • A 120 hour accredited certificate is the working baseline. A Level 5 diploma is what separates you from the field in Budapest.

Do Irish teachers need a visa to teach English in Hungary?

No. Ireland and Hungary are both EU member states, so an Irish passport gives you the right to live and work in Hungary without a visa, a work permit or an employer sponsor. That single fact puts you ahead of the North American teachers most Hungary guides are written for, because they need a sponsored permit or a paid placement scheme before they can legally take a classroom.

What you do need is registration. An EEA national staying longer than 90 days in any 180-day period must report to the regional directorate of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing no later than the 93rd day after entering the country. You are issued a registration certificate, normally on the spot, and a Hungarian address card follows by post. Both are open-ended, so this is a one-off piece of admin rather than an annual renewal.

Two documents follow from the address card, and you will need both before you are paid. The first is a tax identification number, the adóazonosító jel, issued by the tax authority. The second is a TAJ card, which is your social security and healthcare number. Employers will usually walk a new foreign teacher through both, and a good school will do it in your first fortnight.

If you are weighing Hungary against other EU options, the same logic of freedom of movement applies across the bloc. Our guide to landing a first TEFL job in Europe covers how Irish teachers use that advantage in practice, and the European Commission’s Your Europe pages set out the residence rules in plain language.

What does an English teacher earn in Hungary?

Expect a full-time contract to land somewhere between the statutory floor for qualified work and the national median wage. Hungary sets two legal minimums each year by government decree. In 2026, the general minimum wage is HUF 322,800 gross per month, and the guaranteed minimum wage, which applies to any job requiring a qualification or degree, is HUF 373,200 gross. A full-time teaching contract that requires a degree cannot legally be advertised below the higher figure.

For context, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office reported average gross monthly earnings of HUF 764,100 and median gross earnings of HUF 615,600 in May 2026. Teaching is not a high-paying profession in Hungary, so a first-year contract typically sits in the lower half of that spread rather than at the average.

Benchmark Gross per month (HUF) Approximate euro Source
Statutory minimum wage, 2026 322,800 around €830 Government decree, 1 January 2026
Guaranteed wage minimum for qualified roles, 2026 373,200 around €955 Government decree, 1 January 2026
Median gross earnings, all sectors 615,600 around €1,580 Hungarian Central Statistical Office, May 2026
Average gross earnings, all sectors 764,100 around €1,960 Hungarian Central Statistical Office, May 2026

Euro figures are approximate and use a working rate of about HUF 390 to €1. Check the European Central Bank daily reference rate before you rely on any conversion. Statutory amounts are gross.

Three things shift the real number. Housing, because a public school placement often comes with a furnished flat and utilities paid, which is worth more than a pay rise. Hours, because language school contracts are counted in contact hours rather than a 40-hour week. And tax, which is where Hungary becomes genuinely unusual.

Why the under 25 tax rule matters more in Hungary than anywhere else

Hungary charges a flat 15 per cent personal income tax and exempts workers under 25 from it entirely, up to a monthly ceiling of HUF 715,765 for 2026. That ceiling is higher than any realistic first teaching salary in the country, so a teacher under 25 pays no income tax at all on their teaching pay. Employee social contributions of 18.5 per cent still apply.

The relief is restricted to citizens of the European Economic Area and a small group of neighbouring states, which means Irish teachers qualify and most of the American and Canadian teachers you will be sharing a staffroom with do not. If you are a recent graduate in your early twenties, Hungary quietly hands you a net pay advantage over your colleagues doing the same job. It is the single strongest argument for Hungary over Poland, Czechia or Slovakia, and almost nobody writing about teaching in Hungary mentions it.

The maths is worth doing before you dismiss a forint salary. On a gross offer of HUF 450,000, a teacher over 25 loses 15 per cent income tax and 18.5 per cent contributions. A teacher under 25 loses only contributions, keeping roughly HUF 67,500 more per month. Over a ten-month school year, that is close to a month and a half of extra salary.

Who actually hires English teachers in Hungary?

Private language schools do most of the hiring, and Budapest is where most of them are. Below that sit four routes worth knowing, each with a different rhythm to its hiring calendar.

Route Who it suits Typical pattern
Private language schools First-time teachers and anyone wanting Budapest Adult evening classes, young learner afternoons, exam preparation. Hiring peaks in August and again in January
Bilingual and international schools Qualified teachers, or TEFL teachers with classroom experience Academic year contracts, better paid, more competitive, often want a degree in a subject
Corporate and business English Teachers with office or industry background Early morning and lunchtime classes at company sites, often freelance and paid by the hour
Public schools through a placement programme Teachers who want housing included and a rural or small city posting Ten-month September to June cycle, or a six-month January start

Patterns described are typical of the Hungarian market in 2026 and vary by employer.

Private tutoring runs alongside all four. Demand comes from school leavers who need a language certificate for university entry and from professionals preparing for work abroad. Rates are set by the teacher rather than published anywhere official, so treat any figure you read online, including ours, as a starting point for negotiation rather than a benchmark.

What qualifications do Hungarian schools ask for?

An accredited 120-hour TEFL certificate is the practical baseline for a role in a language school. Bilingual schools and better-paying corporate contracts will usually want a degree alongside them, and placement programmes make a bachelor’s degree a hard requirement.

Where Hungary differs from the low-barrier markets is in competition rather than regulation. Budapest is a popular city with a large pool of resident English speakers, so a school interviewing for a September start is rarely short of applicants. A regulated qualification is how you get read rather than filtered. Our accredited 120-hour course covers the baseline, and the Ofqual-regulated Level 5 diploma is the version that stands out when a director of studies compares three CVs for one job.

If you are not sure which certificate a Hungarian employer will recognise, our breakdown of TEFL, TESOL and CELTA for Irish teachers explains what the labels mean and where the real differences sit.

What does it cost to live in Budapest on a teaching salary?

Budapest is affordable by Western European standards and expensive by Hungarian ones. Rent is the number that decides whether a teaching salary works. Expect a one-bedroom flat in the city to cost around HUF 230,000 to HUF 310,000 a month, with outer Pest districts at the lower end and District V, District XIII, and the Buda hills at the top. Many buildings add a separate monthly common charge on top of rent, which catches new arrivals out.

Everything else is manageable. A monthly city travel pass is around HUF 9,000, a canteen lunch is a fraction of Dublin prices, and intercity trains are cheap enough that weekends in Pécs, Eger or Debrecen are a normal thing to do rather than a treat. Outside Budapest, rent can halve, which is why a small-city posting with housing included often leaves a teacher better off in cash terms than a Budapest contract that pays more.

Rent and living cost figures are approximate market observations for 2026 and move with the forint. Check current listings before budgeting.

Where else in Hungary can you teach?

Beyond Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Győr and Miskolc all run language schools and bilingual programmes, and all five have universities feeding steady demand for exam preparation. Competition falls sharply outside the capital, so a teacher who is flexible about location will usually find work more quickly and keep more of what they earn.

Győr and Székesfehérvár are worth a specific mention because of the manufacturing and automotive employers around them, which generate corporate English work that Budapest teachers would recognise as well paid. Small city life is quieter, and the English-speaking social scene is thin, so it suits teachers who want to learn some Hungarian rather than float above it.

How do you get hired from Ireland?

Apply in the two hiring windows. August is the big one, ahead of the September academic year, and January is the second, when schools replace teachers who did not last the winter. Outside those months, speculative applications work better in Hungary than in most markets, because the sector is small and directors of studies keep a mental list.

Four practical moves. Get the certificate finished before you apply, because schools hiring in August want someone who can start in weeks. Write to schools directly rather than relying on job boards, since much of the Hungarian market never advertises. Be specific about your availability and your right to work, because stating plainly that you are an EU citizen who needs no permit removes the single biggest objection an employer has. And if you can visit, do, because face-to-face still carries weight in Hungarian hiring.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Irish citizen teach English in Hungary without a visa?

Yes. Ireland and Hungary are both EU member states, so an Irish passport entitles its holder to live and work in Hungary without a visa, work permit, or employer sponsorship. The only requirement is registering your stay with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing by the 93rd day after you arrive.

How much do English teachers earn in Hungary?

A full-time contract for a role requiring a qualification cannot legally pay below the guaranteed wage minimum, which is HUF 373,200 gross a month in 2026. Most language school contracts sit between that floor and the national median gross wage of HUF 615,600, reported by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office for May 2026.

Do teachers under 25 really pay no income tax in Hungary?

Workers under 25 are exempt from Hungary’s flat 15 per cent personal income tax on monthly earnings up to HUF 715,765 in 2026, which is above any normal teaching salary. The relief is open to citizens of the European Economic Area, so Irish teachers qualify. Social contributions of 18.5 per cent still apply.

Do you need a degree to teach English in Hungary?

Not for every route. Private language schools commonly hire on an accredited TEFL certificate alone, particularly for adult conversation and young learner classes. Bilingual schools, corporate contracts and the public school placement programmes normally require a bachelor’s degree as well as a teaching certificate.

When do Hungarian schools hire English teachers?

There are two windows. The main one runs through August ahead of the September academic year, and a second, smaller round happens in January when schools fill mid-year gaps. Speculative applications work well outside those months because much of the Hungarian market never advertises publicly.

Is it cheaper to teach in Budapest or outside it?

Budapest pays more and costs more. A one-bedroom flat in the capital runs roughly HUF 230,000 to HUF 310,000 a month, while rent in Debrecen, Pécs or Miskolc can be close to half that. Teachers on a placement with housing included are often better off in cash terms outside Budapest.
