Bucharest is one of Europe´s most exciting cities, with a creative young population and mesmerising historical footprint. In just under 30 years Romania has recovered from its communist dictatorship to become the cultural melting pot of Eastern Europe. Its nightlife is famous, as is its brutalist architecture. Put aside a few hours to visit the Place of Parliament, the 2nd most significant building in the world.
One cannot think of Romania without thinking of castles. Transylvania offers some of the best, most notably Bran Castle. Perched on top of a cliff face, you get a sense of the folklore and mystery which inspired Bram Stoker´s Dracula.
Once you have had your fill of castles, pick a hiking route along with dense forests of Romania. Our favourite tracks are found along the Carpathian mountains. Watch out for the bears though, Romania has Europe´s largest population of these furry animals. Speaking of bears, head to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary which has given a safe home to nearly 100 rescued bears.
Romania is one of the best and most affordable European countries to travel by train. With an extensive network, you can fill your weekends with trips to medieval towns, like Sighisoara and Sibiu. Summertime is the peak festival season in Europe, and Romania does not disappoint with its offerings. Electric Castle in Bontida and Summer Well in Bucharest showcase live music in unique surroundings. Grab cheap tickets with your fellow TEFL teachers and Romanian students. We might see you there!
