Teach English in Vietnam

There’s little to wonder why Vietnam is on the every TEFL teachers mind, whether you are just starting in your TEFL journey or looking to add more countries to your growing list of  ‘been there got the t-shirt’  countries.

This beautiful country is a dream for teaching English: high salaries, hard-working students and unbeatable adventure! This placement offers a competitive salary, tech-savvy lessons and a whole new TEFL family to call your friends for life. It sounds as good as it is.

Whether you love ancient Asian art, rowing through endless archipelagos on wooden boats (look up Ha Long Bay!) or eating steaming bowls of delicious pho, every TEFL teacher MUST cross Vietnam off their teach and travel list.

TEFL experience requirements

  • Native English speaker
  • Passport holder from one of the following countries: USA, Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland, South Africa or New Zealand
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
  • TEFL qualification
  • Flexible, hardworking and mature
  • A clean bill of health
  • No criminal record

How it works?

If you meet all of the above requirements and already have your TEFL qualification, get in touch with us today about how to advance with the application procedure!

If you are not yet TEFL qualified, request a callback and we can tailor-fit the best TEFL course for your future opportunity in Vietnam (and many other locations).

Once you have decided to apply, your application and CV will be sent to our team on the ground in Vietnam who will screen your full application. If you are called for an interview, make sure your Skype account is set-up and that you have a good internet connection (interviews in busy cafés are a terrible idea!).

As with any job interview, there is no guarantee of employment, but we are here to give you sound advice and expert recommendations on how to nail your interview (we have accumulated over 25 years of experience in the TEFL industry, so we know a thing or two about job applications and interviews).

Getting there

Once you have been formally accepted, you can book your flight to either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, where you will be picked up and transferred to your orientation venue.

After an unforgettable 7-day orientation alongside up to 15 fellow eager TEFL teachers, hop on a bus, train or flight to your new home.

What do you need to organise

  • International flights
  • Police check: Each applicant must have a clean criminal record
  • Budget: Not in school? Excursions and food will come out of your own pocket (but you won´t need to dig very deep in a country as cheap as this)
  • Travel insurance: Comprehensive cover for travel & medical insurance
  • Vaccines: Consult your doctor
  • Visa: ask us more about the visa process and how much you can be supported by your future school
  • Legalisation of documents: ask us more about document legalisation and how you can be supported by your future school

You teaching experience

You are teaching English in this modern age of technology and smart gadgets. No need for lesson planning and books anymore.  Once you are set-up in your class, you will be provided with a smart board, an iPad AND a green screen. Think of all the fun (and educational) music videos you can recreate with your students. Time to start listening to V – pop!

Depending on your experience and expertise in teaching English, you can expect to lead a classroom size of 12-16. Your students can range from young, intermediate or advanced learners.

Working over a five day week, teaching hours range from 18-21, with an additional 6-10 hours of correcting and administrative work.

In Vietnam, weekend school is top-rated, with students using their Saturdays and Sundays to brush up on their English. In this respect, your working week won’t always include free weekends, but that is all part of discovering an entirely new place and culture.

TEFL teachers in Vietnam get some of the most hands-on experience, as you lead the majority of classes independently. So take on this challenge and see yourself grow and develop into a world-class teacher.

Location

We place teachers in over 60 teaching centres across Vietnam. Let us know if you are more of a north-sider or a south-sider, and we will do our best to place you in your top location.

If you have no preference, take a look at that 3,260 km coastline, plot your finger somewhere and google the nearest town or city!

One last tip: This placement offers a flexible contract, so you can chop and choose which locations you want to teach in over a year (or maybe 2).

Outside the classroom

Everyone knows that TEFL translates to work and travel, and South East Asia is on everyone´s bucket list. Teach English in Vietnam and earn an excellent salary; enjoy frequent get-aways to the most exotic and jaw-droppingly beautiful sites known to man.

Whether you are a fearless hiker, an expert kayaker or just someone who loves to sip on coconut juice while lying on a white sandy beach, Vietnam is the dream destination.

If food is more your thing, then you won´t be disappointed. Banh Mi, Pho and Vietnamese coffee; get ready to have a life-long favourite cuisine!

But of course, if you tire of Vietnam (said no-one, ever), you can always book a cheap flight, boat or train to Cambodia, Laos and China. South East Asia will be your oyster!

Allowance

Working no more than 30 hours per week, you can expect a monthly salary from 32,000,000  VND – €1,200 p/m!

  • Overtime opportunities
  • Paid public holidays and flexible time off
  • Options for extended time off of 1-2 months after twelve-month completion
  • Work permit costs reimbursement plan
  • Smaller class sizes (average of 10-16 students per class) than other schools
  • Two-week training course with ongoing training, workshops, continuing professional development, and more
  • Career advancement opportunities within management and beyond

Pssst: rural schools offer an excellent teaching bonus.

Depending on the city where you are based, you can be offered a rental subsidy or could have your entire accommodation paid. Talk to us about what kind of set-up appeals to you most.
